When was the last time you had the ideal morning? Do you get a nervous knot every morning while commuting to work? Do you dread facing your unhappy co-workers every day? While you may not be able to change the environment at your current job, you can learn what to look for in future employers.
There is an overall movement toward a more relaxed corporate work culture. Ken Blanchard, The Blanchard Companies, specializes in leadership and states, “In the past a leader was a boss. Today’s leaders must be partners with their people. They no longer can lead solely based on positional power.” A leader who possesses a high level of integrity and demonstrates interest in his/her employees is likely to enhance the company’s daily operations by having loyal employees who enjoy coming to work each day.
While financial incentives are a great way to increase employee productivity, it does not always ensure that the job will get done. There is a direct correlation between positive morale and company productivity. A key motivation for employees is a work environment where each employee is treated fairly. Managers should build employees’ confidence by providing them with a sense of independence on projects.
When learning more about a potential employer, probe for questions in the interview that will give you key indicators of low employee moral, high employee turnover, and negative performance feedback. Is your interviewer an affective communicator, approachable and sincere? If given the opportunity to meet with future co-workers, inquire about the management style of the boss. Does he/she promote the importance of career goals, continuing education and involvement in volunteer organizations? These are all important characteristics to determine before accepting a job offer as they will ultimately affect your daily happiness at your job.
If you’re a manager, take note that sometimes little things matter the most in a daily routine. Recognize employees’ accomplishments with congratulatory cards. If an important project or event is approaching, give employees notes of encouragement to inspire them along the way. Celebrate birthdays, company anniversaries, and career goals. These small recognitions make employees feel valued.
At the end of the day, we all want to be happy, especially at work. It all comes back to the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them done unto you”.
