Feature Article - The Business Etiquette Edge: Getting the Basics Underway - Second in a Series By Cynthia McDowell, CSEP, CMP, Director of Convention and Meetings, NSSGA
|
|
In this tight economic climate, serious employees are looking for ways to stand out in their career. If you want to be that person, learning and employing etiquette is the right approach. Do the old rules of etiquette still apply today or have things really changed? The fundamentals of etiquette remain the same. Civility or courteousness in society and the workplace is definitely needed and likely more important than ever before. Reinforce and practice these tips when meeting others and you will be noticed for your good manners and considered thoughtful.
Verbal Courtesies: It is impossible to count the number of times per day one should say please and thank you. Letitia Baldrige, etiquette expert notes that when you make even the slightest request of someone, you should begin or end it with please. Examples:
-
When someone opens a door for you or holds the elevator door for you;.
-
When someone serves you in any capacity – a coworker bringing you an item, the restaurant server, the…;
-
When someone does a favor for you; or
-
When someone praises you.
Door Kindnesses:
-
During the normal business day, whoever arrives at the door first should enter and go through it.
-
Be a door holder for others as a common courtesy, regardless if you are male or female. However, you are not required to hold the door for more than three people or you’ve just changed your title to Doorman – the next in line may hold it for the next several people.
-
When a group of five or more comes to your office, you as the host must precede them so you can show your guests where to go.
-
Let your guests or higher ranking than you precede you through doors.
-
If you see a disabled, frail or slow-moving person approaching a swinging door, go first, tell them what you are doing, and hold the door so that it opens slowly.
-
If you know that a door is very heavy and difficult, precede any guest by saying, “This is a heavy door; I’ll go first and give it a shove.”
Elevator Etiquette:
-
Regardless of gender, hold the elevator door for the people coming toward you in the hallway.
-
Everyone at the very front of a crowded elevator car should automatically get off and step to the side when the door opens to allow the people behind them to exit with ease; then, get back into the elevator.
-
In the formal tradition, after the ladies exit the elevator, the person most senior in rank and importance leaves the elevator
-
If you accidentally push against someone in an elevator, say “I’m sorry” or “Please excuse me” or “Pardon me.”
-
Keep talking and movement to a minimum in the tight quarters. Smiles go a long way!
Stairs and Escalators:
-
Going UP, gentlemen follow women and children so as to be their stability in case they stumble.
-
Going DOWN, gentlemen lead others in case they lose their balance.
Moving About:
-
The right way to move is quietly and effortlessly so no one is even aware of your movements and you do not distract the train of thought of others around you.
-
When you enter a room or have people entering your office or home, give the best seat to them – they are your guest.
-
People who sneeze or cough loudly are wanting attention drawn to themselves – don’t let this be you!
-
Remember to smile. Mistakes will be made, but an apology and a smile will cover a misstep. Enjoy your life and smile!
Best Wishes in Strengthening your Career through Etiquette!
